Do I need a separate weapons licence for armed security work?

es. Your Queensland Class 1 security provider licence is issued by the Office of Fair Trading, but the authority to possess and use a firearm while performing armed security duties comes from a separate Security Licence (Guard) issued by Queensland Police Service Weapons Licensing. Queensland law specifically provides that a person performing security guard duties must not physically possess a weapon unless they hold a Security Licence (Guard).

Before applying, you need the appropriate security provider licence with cash-in-transit listed as a function and you must complete the approved armed-security training for the weapon categories you intend to use. QPS currently requires the relevant training evidence for a new application to have been issued within the previous 12 months. It is also important to understand that this is an occupational weapons licence. It does not give you a general right to carry a firearm whenever you like. If you are an employee, the firearm is issued by your licensed security employer for the shift and you may physically possess it only while actually performing security duties that reasonably require a weapon – escorting cash or valuables is specifically given as an example. Your Security Licence (Guard) also has a maximum term of one year and requires approved security guard requalification training within the 60 days before applying for renewal. So think of the two licences separately:

OFT licenses you to perform the security function; QPS Weapons Licensing separately licenses you to possess and use the firearm while performing authorised armed-security duties.
