Does Certificate II in Security Operations let me carry a gun?

Armed Security and Weapons · 30 views

No. Completing the CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations and obtaining your Queensland Class 1 security provider licence does not authorise you to carry a firearm. Even adding the cash-in-transit function to your Class 1 licence does not, by itself, allow you to carry a gun. The Office of Fair Trading specifically confirms that a cash-in-transit licence does not authorise firearms.

To become an armed security officer, there are additional hoops to jump through. You need the appropriate security training, the cash-in-transit function on your current OFT Class 1 licence, additional approved firearms training and a separate Security Licence (Guard) issued by Queensland Police Service Weapons Licensing. Even then, this is an occupational firearms licence – it is not permission to carry a firearm whenever you like. Queensland weapons legislation only authorises a security guard to physically possess the weapon while actually performing security duties that reasonably require it, such as escorting cash or valuables. For an employee, the weapon must also be issued by the licensed employer for the shift.

BARS Training Australia provides the training pathway from Certificate II through cash-in-transit and into specialist armed-security training. Our advice with firearms is always the same: there are no shortcuts. If you want to work armed, undertake proper supervised practical training and obtain the correct QPS weapons licence before ever carrying a firearm for security duties.
