Does BARS assess language literacy and numeracy before security training?

Yes. BARS Training Australia assesses Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) as part of our pre-enrolment process, but we also assess digital literacy. This is not simply something BARS has decided to do. Standard 2.2 of the 2025 Standards for RTOs specifically requires an RTO, before enrolment, to have procedures to review a prospective student's skills and competencies, including their language, literacy and numeracy proficiency and digital literacy.

The RTO must then use that review to advise the applicant whether the training product is suitable for them. During the BARS application process you will therefore complete LLN activities together with several simple digital tasks. You may be asked to verify emails, follow electronic instructions, take and upload a selfie, upload photographic identification or provide a screenshot. Together with several other questions, these activities help us identify the level of student support you may require before you enrol.

Digital literacy is also increasingly relevant to security employment, where officers routinely use electronic incident reporting, rostering applications, access-control systems, CCTV, GPS and mobile technology. Having difficulty with part of our pre-enrolment assessment does not automatically prevent you from undertaking security training. The purpose is to identify your individual needs, determine whether the course is suitable and establish what support or reasonable adjustment may be appropriate.

That is exactly what a proper pre-enrolment assessment is supposed to achieve – finding out what support you may need before you become a student, rather than discovering it after your training has commenced.
