Can I add cash-in-transit to my existing licence?

Yes. If you already hold a Queensland Class 1 security provider licence, you can apply to the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) to add the cash-in-transit function to your existing licence. You will need to complete the required cash-in-transit training and provide evidence of that training with your upgrade application. OFT currently requires the application to add the function to be made using the Class 1 security licence application form, selecting the upgrade option and identifying cash-in-transit as the additional function. Fees also apply to add a function.

BARS Training Australia regularly conducts the three-unit cash-in-transit course following our CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations courses, and we highly recommend CIT as an additional licence function. The more appropriate functions you hold, the broader the range of security duties you can lawfully perform and the more useful you may be to a prospective employer. If your original security training was completed before 2020, there is an additional issue to consider.

OFT advises that applicants who have not completed the required security training since the new training package commenced in 2020 may need to undertake or redo the current training before another function can be added. Remember, adding cash-in-transit does not make you an armed guard.

If you later want to carry a firearm while performing authorised security duties, further firearms training and a separate Security Licence (Guard) through Queensland Police Service Weapons Licensing are required.
