Do bouncers need a licence in Queensland?

Crowd Control in Queensland · 21 views
Yes. In Queensland, what most people call a “bouncer” is legally a crowd controller and must hold the appropriate Class 1 security provider licence with the crowd controller function before performing those duties for payment or reward. Interestingly, the word “bouncer” is not just industry slang. The Security Providers Act 1993 itself uses a “bouncer in a hotel” as an example when explaining the meaning of a crowd controller. Some people in the security industry don't particularly like the term “bouncer”, but BARS has never tried to hide from it.

In fact, it is part of our history. BARS is an acronym for Bouncer And Responsible Service, reflecting our long involvement in both the security and hospitality industries. The role itself, however, has evolved considerably. Modern crowd control is not about having the biggest person standing at the door. It is about monitoring behaviour, communicating effectively, identifying developing risks, managing conflict, making sensible decisions and helping maintain a safe environment for patrons, staff and the wider community.

To become licensed as a crowd controller, you need to complete the approved training and apply to the Queensland Office of Fair Trading for the appropriate security provider licence. BARS Training Australia specialises in security and hospitality training because these industries frequently work hand-in-hand, particularly in licensed premises, entertainment venues and events. That's why we describe ourselves as the Security and Hospitality Experts – it's what we do, and we've been doing it for over 20 years.
