What happens if my first aid expires before my security licence?

Your first aid expiry date and your security licence expiry date are two different things and need to be managed separately.

If maintaining current first aid forms part of the ongoing revalidation conditions applying to your crowd controller or bodyguard function, allowing it to expire can place you in breach of a condition of your security provider licence. The Office of Fair Trading may take disciplinary action where required ongoing training has not been maintained. There are also practical employment consequences. Many security employers now use governance and rostering systems such as Guardhouse to monitor licences, qualifications and competency expiry dates. If the site or employer requires current first aid and your qualification has expired, you may find that the system will not allow you to be rostered for shifts until your competency is renewed.

More importantly, think about why security officers maintain first aid skills in the first place. We work around members of the public and are frequently among the first people available when somebody is injured or becomes seriously ill. Allowing your first aid competency to expire may create public safety concerns and could also raise significant workplace and public liability issues for both you and your employer if something goes wrong.

Don't simply look at the expiry date printed on your security licence. Keep track of your first aid, CPR and any compulsory revalidation dates separately and renew them before they expire.
