Yes, Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available for security training, but it is important to understand what RPL actually means. RPL is an assessment process – it is not simply an exemption from doing the course because you have worked in security for a long time. You must provide sufficient evidence to demonstrate that you currently possess the knowledge and practical skills required by each unit of competency.
Previous qualifications, employment records, workplace documents, licences and other evidence may form part of that assessment, but practical skills may still need to be demonstrated. This is particularly important in security because many competencies involve practical performance in a real or simulated workplace environment. BARS Training Australia will review previous qualifications and relevant industry experience before enrolment to determine whether RPL or credit transfer may be appropriate. However, there is another important consideration for Queensland security providers – the Office of Fair Trading has specific requirements regarding the approved training used for security licensing. An RPL outcome therefore needs to satisfy both the national competency requirements and the current Queensland licensing requirements.
For some experienced security providers with older qualifications, particularly those seeking to add another licence function, completing the current CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations may still be necessary. Our advice is to show us what you already have before enrolling. We certainly don't want to make an experienced security provider unnecessarily repeat something they can genuinely demonstrate – but RPL still requires evidence and assessment to prove current competency.
