What should I put on my resume for a first security job?

Keep it simple. For your first security job, your resume should clearly show your contact details, security licence number and licence functions, relevant qualifications, previous employment and any skills or experience that demonstrate reliability, communication, customer service or responsibility.

Don't worry if you have never worked in security before – everybody has to get their first security job somewhere. To be honest, your resume is only part of the equation. How you present yourself to a prospective security employer can be far more important. Dress professionally, communicate confidently, turn up on time and be prepared to talk about why you want to work in security.

Do some research before the interview. Look at the company's website and social media, speak with security officers wearing the company's uniform where appropriate, and develop an understanding of the type of security work the company actually performs. The interview is also your opportunity to assess the employer. Respectfully ask about expected wages, applicable award or enterprise agreement, employment conditions, workers' compensation arrangements and public liability insurance. You are potentially trusting that company with your livelihood and professional reputation, so asking sensible questions is entirely reasonable.

BARS Training Australia works with security employers throughout Queensland and helps our graduates understand what employers are looking for. A ten-page resume will not compensate for arriving late, poorly presented or knowing nothing about the company. Keep the resume simple – your attitude, presentation, communication and work ethic are what will help you turn that piece of paper into your first security job.
