What qualities do security employers look for?

Security Jobs and Employment · 24 views
Security employers look for people they can rely on. You can teach someone security procedures, but qualities such as a good work ethic, reliability, honesty, common sense and the right attitude are much harder to teach. Good communication skills are particularly important because security is fundamentally a people industry. Employers want officers who can speak respectfully with clients and members of the public, remain calm when dealing with difficult people and make sensible decisions without unnecessarily escalating a situation. Professional presentation also matters.

Turning up on time, wearing your uniform correctly, maintaining personal presentation and treating the client's workplace professionally all contribute to the reputation of both you and your employer. Employers also value observation, accurate reporting, confidence, flexibility and availability. Security operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so being prepared to work nights, weekends and public holidays can certainly increase your employment opportunities. Previous security experience is helpful, but it is not everything. BARS Training Australia regularly sees new entrants to the industry who bring excellent transferable skills from hospitality, retail, defence, emergency services, construction and many other occupations. Our advice is simple: be reliable, communicate well, present professionally, use your common sense and be prepared to learn.

Your CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations gives you the foundation skills to enter the industry, but your attitude and work ethic will ultimately determine the reputation you build once someone gives you that first opportunity.
