What training do I need to conduct workplace drug and alcohol testing?

The current nationally recognised unit for workplace drug and alcohol specimen collection is HLTPAT010 Collect specimens for drugs of abuse testing. This unit replaced HLTPAT005 in December 2025 and is the current training BARS Training Australia now has on scope.
HLTPAT010 provides the skills and knowledge required to conduct urine and oral-fluid drug specimen collection and breath testing while following the specialised procedures required for drugs-of-abuse testing. Training includes confirming testing requirements, preparing the person and equipment, obtaining informed consent, collecting specimens correctly, preventing or identifying possible tampering, maintaining specimen integrity, completing documentation and maintaining chain of custody for specimens requiring transport or laboratory confirmation.
The practical assessment is important. To achieve competency, you must demonstrate collection of all three specimen types – urine, oral fluid and breath – from at least two different individuals and correctly select, prepare and use compliant testing equipment and collection kits. Assessment must initially include simulation before demonstration in a clinical workplace or an environment that reflects a real workplace. The unit applies not only in healthcare settings but also in workplaces where drug and alcohol testing occurs, making it particularly useful additional training for security officers working around mining, resources, transport, industrial facilities, gatehouses and other safety-sensitive workplaces.
There are no prerequisite units or specific licensing requirements attached to HLTPAT010 itself. BARS Training Australia can now provide HLTPAT010 as nationally recognised training, giving security officers and other workers another practical skill that can broaden their employment opportunities.
