Do I need to be physically strong to become a security guard?

No. The old “bouncer” days, where physical size was often seen as one of the most important attributes, are largely gone. Modern security work is much more about communication, observation, judgement, confidence and knowing how to deal effectively with people. You certainly do not need to be big or exceptionally strong to become a good security officer.

Having a professional presence and good self-confidence certainly helps, but these are also qualities that develop with training and experience. Everyone entering the security industry has to start somewhere, and you cannot gain experience unless you are prepared to have a go. The CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations provides the foundation skills and practical training needed to commence working in the industry, while workplace experience will continue to build your confidence and ability. Security is also very much a team environment. You will commonly work with other security officers and colleagues who support each other when situations become difficult or assistance is required.

Good security officers learn to communicate, assess situations and seek assistance when necessary rather than relying on physical strength. So no, you do not have to be big and strong to work in security. A professional attitude, good people skills, confidence, sound judgement and a willingness to learn are far more important.
