Can I add monitoring to an existing security licence?

Yes. You can apply to the Queensland Office of Fair Trading (OFT) to add the security officer (monitoring) function to your existing Class 1 security provider licence. However, adding a new function requires you to satisfy the current requirements applying to that function. OFT specifically advises that anyone who has not completed the required security training since 2020, when the new training package commenced, will need to undertake or redo the required training before a new function can be added. This is particularly important for some of our experienced security providers who obtained their original licence using qualifications from an older security training package.
Your existing licence functions can remain valid, but when you apply to add another function, OFT assesses the new application against the current training requirements. The application to add monitoring is made as an upgrade to your existing Class 1 licence, and you must provide evidence of any relevant training required by OFT. An upgrade fee also applies. Before enrolling in another security course, BARS Training Australia recommends allowing us to review your existing qualifications and current licence functions. We can help identify whether you actually need additional training or whether your existing qualifications satisfy the requirements.
Adding security officer (monitoring) can be worthwhile because it broadens the range of security duties and employment opportunities available to you, particularly in CCTV, alarm monitoring, control rooms and increasingly technology-based security environments.
