Does Certificate II cover monitoring security?

Yes. The CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations provides the entry-level training pathway in Queensland for the security officer (monitoring) function, as well as security officer (unarmed) and crowd controller. Monitoring security is much broader than simply watching CCTV screens. Modern security officers work with CCTV systems, alarms, access-control systems, duress alarms, communications equipment and other technology used to monitor and protect people and property. A monitoring officer may identify suspicious behaviour, assess developing incidents, communicate with officers on the ground, coordinate responses, contact emergency services and maintain accurate records of events.

The CPP20218 course develops many of the foundation skills required for this work, including communication, risk assessment, access control, screening, incident response, reporting and working effectively within a security team. At BARS Training Australia, we encourage students completing CPP20218 to consider applying for the security officer (monitoring) function together with crowd controller and security officer (unarmed). Having multiple appropriate functions on your Class 1 security provider licence can broaden your employment opportunities and provide greater flexibility as your security career develops.

Technology is becoming an increasingly important part of modern security, so monitoring skills can be particularly valuable. Completing CPP20218 does not itself issue your licence; you must still apply to the Queensland Office of Fair Trading and satisfy its licensing and suitability requirements.
